HOLIDAYS
IN WALES
~ Cwm
Hwylfod ~
Cwm Hwylfod
is a genuine 400 years old sheep farm, set in a secluded hillside
location about 5 miles from the small historic market town of Bala, on
the edge of the Snowdonia National Park.
The Name "Cwm
Hwylfod" means 'Valley of Happiness'. The building was originally an
old inn (hence the connection with happiness?) which stood at the junction
of 5 drovers' roads. The old house, cleverly sited in a dip in the
hillside and over-looking the Dee Valley, retains its thick outer walls
and wooden inner walls made from old ships' timbers.
The views from the
house are magnificent and there are plenty of walks from around the farm
itself.

Cwm Hwylfod is
a typical Welsh hill farm. There are about 300 sheep and assorted chickens
and ducks. Visitors, especially children, are welcome to join in farm
activities, they will be thrilled to feed the lambs, hens and ducks,
collect eggs and generally "help" on the farm. (We can supply
wellingtons and anoraks)
We have 3 sheepdogs
which can be seen as they work with the flock.
All food served is
home cooked, using as many local ingredients as possible. Children, babies, vegans, vegetarians and those on special diets are
all catered for.
The
Accommodation

Cwm Hwylfod
has three letting bedrooms, two are twin rooms and the third room is a family
room - giving a total of 6 bed spaces. All rooms have tea & coffee making facilities,
washbasins with H & C and of course central heating for year-round comfort.
There are 2 bathrooms.
We
have a comfortable residents' lounge with colour television and there are
washing and drying facilities, a cot and high chair and there is ample private parking.
Special
Facilities
Cwm Hwylfod is
in the centre of excellent walking country, and to make your walks more
extensive, we offer to arrange a pick-up or let-down service
for you.
We have maps and
leaflets covering all areas and attractions, which you are welcome to
borrow.
Pony trekking and
water sports can be booked in advance.
Courses in EFL
(English as a foreign Language) can be arranged at the house.
Bala
Bala,
our nearest shopping facility, is approximately 10 minutes drive away.
It is an attractive and lively
historic market town within the boundaries of Snowdonia National Park
(designated an area of outstanding natural beauty) ideally situated for touring North and Mid Wales.
One would have difficulty finding a location as well situated as
the Bala area. We are within an hour's spectacular drive of most of the
coastal resorts of Mid and North Wales, not to mention the innumerable
beauty spots and magnificent views within the interior of this beautiful
region, including Mount Snowdon itself.
There
are interesting shops, inns, restaurants and an intriguing historical
Town Walk. Bala boasts its own lake - Bala Lake or Llyn Tegid, the
largest natural lake in Wales, alongside which runs a charming
narrow-gauge steam railway.
Llyn
Tegid is the home of a unique fish, the Gwyniad (that's for real, not a
legend) which is said to date back to the Ice-Age.
Activities
The
Bala region is brimming with outdoor activities. It was the location for
the World Canoeing championships on the challenging River Tryweryn, at
the excellent centre you can book a white-water rafting experience! Bala
Lake has a sailing club and a waterborne activities centre. People come
from far and wide to use the lake for windsurfing etc. The River Dee is
famous for fly fishing and there are opportunities for shooting game or
clays. Walking is probably the most popular activity and little wonder
with the wealth of beautiful countryside that abounds. Mountain climbing
is also available nearby. For those who want to try out their 4-wheel
drive machines, there are excellent courses available from Bala. The
Tourist Information Centre is located at the Lake-shore and has all the
information you will need to find the activities you require, or maybe
you will find new ones to challenge you.
