History of Bryn Tegid

Bryn Tegid was built in 1849 for Major General Robert Owen Jones (1837 to 1926 - buried in the local churchyard at Llanycil). Amongst other things, he organised the Ordinance Survey of Wales and was managing director of the "Army & Navy Stores" in London.

The Bryn Tegid estate extended to some 200 acres including 2 farms. It included the lake foreshore where he built a stone landing stage and was the first person to own a yacht on the lake.

The General's son, Rhodri Owen Jones (1887-1916), was educated at the Royal Military College and passed out of Sandhurst became a Captain in the 36th Jacob's Horse Regiment of the Indian Army. He
was sadly killed in Flanders during the First World War

Descendents of the General and his son still live in properties within the Estate and are happy to chat about their proud history and genealogy. A full family tree of the Major's family traces back to Edward III and thence back to William the Conqueror, through him to Rolf-1st Duke of the Normans (ruled 911-927). Alternatively through Matilda, wife of Henry I through the kings of the House of Cerdic to Ecgberht (ruled 802-837).

A famous descendent of the family is Christopher Timothy, the actor of "All Creatures Great and Small" fame. A wealth of local knowledge is available for the asking!!
